Pictures from the RedFlagDeals.com Bargain Hunter’s Picnic!

Last Sunday we held our first big “real world” event for the readers of RedFlagDeals.com: The Bargain Hunter’s Picnic!  It was a big success with about 500 people showing up to enjoy, fun, food, and prizes.  We also managed to raise about $1500 for the Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation!

We’d like to extend a special thanks to all of the volunteers who came early in the day to help set up and helped run the stations during the event!  Everyone had a great time and we hope to do an even bigger event next summer!

Check out photos from the event here: Picnic Photo Gallery

RFD’s Charity Drive for Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank

Earlier in the week Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank launched an online portal that let’s companies and other groups set up their own online food drive.  RedFlagDeals.com was one of the first groups to do so.  We set a modest goal of raising $1000, but the RFD community surpassed that goal in less than 24 hours, so we’ve set a new goal of $2500.  Right now we are at $1750 raised.  Any and all donations are appreciated and a tax receipt will be sent to you via email.  They even offer corporate sponsorship of smaller drives such as ours.

Olive Canada Network Launch

Richard and I attended the launch party for the Olive Canada Network last night.  They seem to have been preparing in stealth because up until I got there, I didn’t know what the network was and couldn’t find anything online.  From my casual conversation with people, it seemed I was not alone in my ignorance.  Now I know a bit anyway (it was more of a party than an information session). So…

What is the Olive Canada Network?

Well TorStar Digital has acquired Performer Media.  Performer was a small ad network that focused on selling the Canadian ad inventory on US sites.  We worked a little bit with them around the launch of PriceCanada.com last fall.  The Olive Canada Network is a combination of that inventory and expertise with the inventory and expertise of TorStar Digital.  So the ad network will rep all of TorStar’s sites (Workopolis, Toronto.com, etc) as well as the Canadian inventory for sites like CNet and Maxim.com.

It’s an interesting business model and there hasn’t really been any major competition in the Canadian ad network world for a while (we hear rumblings from American networks all of the time, but rarely anything concrete) so things could get very exciting.

Tonight we’re off to the Sequentia office warming party.  We’ll have to invite everyone to our place pretty soon. smile

TorCamp & Mesh

(Yes, this is a little late)

Derek and I attended TorCamp 2.0 and the Mesh Conference in May and had a great time.  We made some great contacts which should lead to some interesting partnerships.  Here are a few of my thoughts:

TorCamp 2.0
We were one of the many sponsors of this event and although the venue was less than ideal, we had a great time.  Derek and I lead a discussion on Affiliate programs in Canada which seemed to go over well.  It was primarily a primer as many of the attendees didn’t have experience with such programs (Tor/DemoCamp tends to skew towards a more tech focused crowd).  As you know if you’ve read any other blog posts about the event, the food was simply amazing.  All in all it went great and we look forward to the next one.

We’d also like to send our best wishes to David Crow, one of the co-organizers of the event, as he’s recently had some health troubles.

Mesh
The first Mesh conference took place in the 2 days immediately following BarCamp 2.0.  Considering that it was the organizers first event, it was amazingly well run.  The first day focused on how Web 2.0 will influence the media business and society as a whole, while the second day focused on marketing and start-ups.  The event had a very interesting cross section of attendees with a great mix of media, marketing, tech, and VC people.

Both events were great and it’s been amazing to see the transformation of the Toronto web/start up community from when we set up our first office in Toronto last summer.  Hopefully these events are just the tip of the iceberg and the Toronto community will continue to grow and… mesh.

I’ll do my best to keep this blog more timely in the future. smile

A few words on the VISA Summit

Ken Schafer, who writes at wonderful blog on Canadian online marketing at OneDegree.ca, asked me to join him and some leading Canadian retailers on a marketing best practices panel for the VISA E-Commerce Summit that took place on Tuesday. It was a great event with a great audience and I definitely learned a lot about the state of the Canadian marketplace.

Some of it was a confirmation of a lot of what we’ve been doing. Communities are really going to help drive the online shopping in Canada and I was happy to see that reflected in some of the research. Affiliate programs, shopping search, and social shopping are going to become the norm and the retailers that will succeed will have to embrace them. In the next few years retailers in Canada have a bit of catching up to do before their US counterparts step in.

Events like this one are great for the industry and helps highlight some of the emerging trends as more and more Canadians shop online. It was great to see a lot of the leading retailers like Sony, Dell, Sears, and Staples at the event. A big thanks also goes out to VISA for holding the event and encouraging the sharing of knowledge. Hopefully we can continue to do our part to help the industry grow as well.
